Yoga at the Wall
by Nancy McCaochan

Yoga at the Wall synthesizes yoga and chiropractic techniques to create a foundation for using the wall during yoga practice. The wall creates external resistance and increases mechanical leverage to optimize both stretching and strength training. A wall gives needed support, taking fear out of the equation or showing us where fear prevents us from learning. A wall also teaches the basics of alignment, which increases our proprioception and our ability to feel and open. From simple awareness exercises to complex balance postures, Yoga at the Wall is helpful in teaching those of us who already practice yoga how to deepen that practice.

For those new to yoga, Yoga at the Wall offers the timeless wisdom and practical techniques of an ancient health and wellness systemthat stretches and tones muscles, strengthens bones, tones internal organs, improves posture and balance, assists the lungs and heart, regulates the nervous and endocrine systems, cultivates mental clarity and peace of mind, and enhances the life force to increase vitality.

Hatha yoga is the most well-known of the various forms of this practice and combines activity ("ha" /solar /masculine energy) with receptivity ("tha" /lunar /female reflectiveness) to describe a way of working with the physical body that fuses action with self-awareness. More specifically hatha yoga brings the physical body under the intelligent direction of a mind that becomes more sensitive to the body's processes and internal needs. Doing wall yoga can aid this understanding. Yoga at the Wall shows us how.
